Certificate In Website Design
(16 weeks US$ 800)
This course is for students who want to become designers,
producers or managers of World Wide Web and intranet sites. It
is particularly suited to people who wish to explore this new
medium in depth and exploit it to its full advantage.
Both creative and technical aspects will be covered. Candidates
should have completed their secondary education and have an
upper intermediate level of English.
Mature students will be considered. A good basic knowledge of
computing fundamentals will be an advantage.
The Internet has revolutionised communications in the modern
world. The World Wide Web, the multimedia-orientated side of
the Internet, has made possible rapid access to visual and
audio information in a way previously impossible. Private and
business users can now view text, images and video and hear
sound in web pages and browse quickly from site to site in a
truly interactive way. The market is now global and
instantaneous and the medium has expanded at a phenomenal rate
creating a need for skilled workers to design and maintain the
ever-increasing number of web sites coming online.
Diploma in e-Business Technology (Web Development)
(36 weeks-US$ 1800)
Businesses are being forced to change in response to the rapid
pace of technological advancement that has occurred over the
last decade. An exciting competitive business model based on
electronic business practices is evolving.
The term "e-business" refers to the process of conducting
business using these new interactive technologies. e-business
involves using technology to provide a basis to enhance trade
"online", improve customer service and forge closer links with
business partners.
The Internet as a platform and one of its major components the
World-Wide-Web, has allowed e-business to thrive in the past
few years. As well as numerous start-up companies with new
ideas and business models, virtually all companies around the
world with traditional business models have set up or are in
the process of setting up their business processes on the
World-Wide-Web. The possibilities are virtually endless.
As a minimum an "Intranet" could be set up on the company's
internal network to deliver timely news and messages, in-house
product brochures, work collaborations and online meetings. The
next step could be to establish an "Internet" website. The
classic use of this would be as a "static" tool delivering
company information and acting as an Electronic Brochure.
However, recently the usage of websites has been leveraged to
the status of a "Web Application". A Web Application provides
anything from an interactive product selection and description
tool to a place where customers can conveniently communicate
with staff to providing a full-blown virtual store
(e-Commerce). The latter provides facilities for product
selection (perhaps through an Auction interface), ordering,
shipping terms, discounts, stock control and basic pre- and
post-sales support.
For processes involving business partners an "Extranet" can be
set up. This is simply an Intranet with secure access to
certain areas for preferred partners. Timely information,
product and services news and support can be efficiently
delivered to partners. This technology has also been embraced
by businesses due to massive cost saving and enhanced customer
service.
These developments in the business world have resulted in a
massive global skills shortage in this field. People with the
right knowledge and experience in design and development of
software for the web are highly sought after. This has
naturally pushed out the boundaries of salaries for this type
of personnel. According to analysts this shortage is set to
remain for at least the next five years.
Successful students of this course therefore, will be able to
take advantage of the critical skills shortage and ultimately
demand high salaries. They will also have the necessary
knowledge to decide on which areas they wish to concentrate and
specialise in for the future.
